Information for lawyers providing duty lawyer services at specific courts
Changes to the duty lawyer service have been in place at the Auckland, Waitakere, Wellington, Lower Hutt and Porirua district courts since 2006 or 2007. For further information on the arrangements at these courts see Duty lawyer services at specific large courts (pdf 96kb).
Similar changes to the duty lawyer service have been in place at the Manukau district court since 12 July 2010. For information on the changes implemented at Manukau, see Reform of the duty lawyer service at the Manukau District Court (pdf 85kb).
Alongside the changes to the duty lawyer service, changes have also been made to criminal legal aid assignment procedures in the Auckland and Wellington metropolitan areas, as well as to arrangements for entering the duty lawyer rosters at the courts where changes have been introduced.
Further duty lawyer reforms are now planned for the Papakura and Pukekohe courts in November 2010, alongside establishment of the Public Defence Service at these courts.
